What Is Mental Health?

Mental health builds our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and act. Mental health is described as a state of well-being where a person is able to cope with the normal stresses of life. Mental health is important at all stages of life, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood. Our well-being permits productive work output and helps for meaningful contributions to society. Causes of mental health We experience mental health problems that are related to thinking, mood, and behavior throughout our life. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:
  • Biological factors: include genes or brain chemistry
  • Life experiences, including trauma or abuse
  • Family history of mental health problems
  • Our lifestyles, such as diet, physical activity, and substance use
How can we know we are suffering from mental health problems? Experiencing some of the following feelings or behaviors can begin warning signs of mental health problems:
  • Eating or sleeping in excess or insufficiently.
  • Detach from people and usual activities.
  • Feeling low or no energy.
  • Feeling numbness, empty, lifeless.
  • Feeling unexplained aches and pains.
  • Feeling helpless or hopeless.
  • Using drugs, alcohol, or smoking more frequently than normal.
  • Experiencing exceptional amounts of confusion, forgetfulness, agitation, rage, anxiety, worry, or fear.
  • Harassing or fighting with family and friends.
  • Experiencing mood swings that cause problems in relationships.
  • Having irrelevant thoughts and memories.
  • Hearing voices with no identifiable source.
  • Having thoughts of harming oneself or others.
  • Being unable to carry out simple everyday activities.
Other risk factors of mental illness include:
  • Adverse childhood experiences.
  • Past or present trauma.
  • Present or past experiences of being abused or assaulted.
  • Sudden loss.

  • Work productively
  • Contribute meaningfully to their communities

  • Social interaction, Cultivating healthy relationships
  • Staying positive
  •  Engaging yourself  in physical activity and Exercise
  • Helping peoples
  • Getting sufficient sleep
  • Developing coping skills
  • Avoidance of alcohol and substance abuse
  • Breaking down large tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks
  • Eating well
  • Meditation, breathing exercises, and other self-care activities.
